This is a Wheatstone Single-Action Bass-Baritone with steel reeds. It has had new pads fitted in recent years, and is tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz). It has been checked over and improved by Dave Elliott.

The easiest way to describe the range of this concertina is as a Baritone which is extended down into the Bass range. It is single-action, which means that it only plays in one direction and has ‘gills’ on the bellows to allow quick draw on the pull. The benefit of a single-action is that no valves are required and the air flow is incredibly powerful and direct to the reeds, meaning that the concertina plays incredibly responsively, and with plenty of presence and volume. These were made to be band instruments where volume is essential, but in more modern playing you won’t find any other kind of Baritone as prominent as a single-action. It’s overall in very good condition.
