This is a Lachenal Paragon 48-Key Treble with steel reeds. It has been completely rebuilt, and features new pads, valves, bellows and straps, and has been tuned to concert pitch (a=440hz).
This is an instrument that possibly won’t be appealing to many people, but will be the perfect addition for somebody. Every note on this concertina is tuned down 3-semitones from a standard English treble concertina. That means that, if you look at an English concertina as being in the key of C, this Paragon is in the key of A. You might wonder why somebody would do that, and the simple answer is that it opens more doors to different keys. A becomes extremely easy to play it, and this is a key with the range that most female singers will often feel most comfortable in. It also changes the sound of the concertina, giving it an almost organ/harmonium-like tone. When we first realised what key the instrument was in we thought we’d have to get rid of it fairly cheap, but after playing it and realising what a beautiful sounding concertina it is, we made sure to give it the best restoration possible.
