This is a Lachenal Excelsior 48-Key Treble with steel reeds. It has been fitted with new pads, valves and straps, and tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz).
The Excelsior is always a beautiful instrument, and this one comes fitted with its original glass buttons. The thinking behind glass buttons is that they would not wear down like bone or corrode like metal, but due to the low number of instruments made with glass buttons, they’re incredibly hard to replace these days if one does get broken, so it’s rare to find a concertina with a full set of intact glass buttons. Whilst the instrument does have finger wear around the buttons (we prefer to think of this as a sign of a well loved instrument!), it’s still a very nice looking thing that plays very well. It’s at the top of Lachenal’s mid-range, wooden-ended english concertinas before the jump up to Edeophones, and will do a job for any player of this system.
A really nice thing.
