This is a Wheatstone 48-Key Tenor with steel reeds (serial number 36517). It has been refinished, fitted with new bushings, pads, valves, straps and bellows, and been tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz).
It’s reasonable to expect that Wheatstone’s from this period of production will be lower quality than earlier concertinas due to the cheapening of the manufacturing process at that time. Generally that is the case, but it really isn’t with this lovely thing. Firstly, it’s looking lovely due to a recent full restoration, but the biggest draw of this concertina becomes apparent when played. It’s a responsive player with the most beautiful tone. Obviously tone is a subjective thing, but both of us here love playing this concertina, and the sound it makes is wonderful in both of our opinions. It’s a very light concertina too, which is a big plus for a lot of players. We’d consider the Tenor to be the ideal range for a concertina by modern standards- an extra row of lower notes underneath the standard Treble range, minus the top row of a Treble which isn’t really used anyway.
This one won’t be around for long, so get in touch today.
