This is an early Wheatstone 48-Key Baritone with brass reeds. It has been fitted with new pads and valves, and has been tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz). The serial number is 9402 (mid-1850s).
This is a really interesting baritone concertina, and probably our favourite of the ones we have in stock- which we wouldn’t have expected from a very early, tutor model, brass-reeded instrument. The action is incredibly light, and it is a very responsive instrument (for a baritone). The tone is unique- perhaps more organ-like, although sound is very difficult to describe in words! It has had metal guards retrofitted at some point around the buttons which aren’t to everybody’s taste, but they do protect the instrument, and it has a repaired crack on the right hand.
You won’t find a cheaper baritone than this that has any sort of quality, and this is no doubt a quality instrument in terms of playability. If the tone suits you, then this is the perfect concertina.
