This is a Jeffries 38-Key Anglo in G/D with steel reeds. It has been fitted with new pads, springs and valves, and been tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz).
This is a rare example of a Jeffries in remarkably original condition. Of course, things like pads, valves, springs and straps inevitably need to be changed during the lifespan of a concertina, but it is unusual to find a Jeffries that appears to have been made in G/D originally as opposed to being tuned down from Ab/Eb, with original bellows in very good condition, and having no reeds which have been moved around or swapped out. It is also an incredible player. G/D concertinas can sometimes be a little slower than their C/G counterparts due to the size of the reeds, but this one is lightning quick, responsive, and has that trademark Jeffries sound- a bite and brightness that no other maker ever really matched. At some point in its life, somebody has ‘protected’ the bellows with a kind of varnish, which has indeed maintained the decorative gold-tooling very nicely, but has stained the very top of some of the bellows papers.
You won’t get a better G/D anglo than this from any of the Victorian makers.
