This is a Lachenal Excelsior 48-Key Treble with steel reeds. This is a commission sale on behalf of a concertina restorer who has worked on this instrument himself, so it is in very good playing condition. It has been fitted with new pads, valves and straps, and tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz).
This is a very nice instrument, especially aesthetically- the decorative bellows looks particularly striking with the already attractive Excelsior design. The interesting thing about this concertina is that the reed-pan is double-walled, like it would be in a George Case concertina. This essentially means that, unlike a standard reed-pan which has one walled side and one flat side, both sides have walls which are chambered. As you can see on the pictures, this makes the bellows frames double the height that you’d see on most concertinas. The idea behind this is to improve efficiency of every reed, but it does add a slight extra weight too.
The concertina plays well and has a lovely gentle tone. It comes with the original baffles for each end inside the case (which isn’t original). The baffles have the label of an instrument dealer in Stafford, which is very close to home for us and is a label which we’ve never seen before!
