This is a Rock Chidley 48-Key Treble with nickel silver reeds. It has been fitted with new pads, valves and straps, and has been tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz).
This must be one of the most spectacularly decorative concertinas ever made. Rock Chidley showcased at both The Great Exhibition of 1851 and The International Exhibition of 1862, and we have to assume that this concertina was made for one of those events. It is a heavy instrument due to to the gold-plated metal trimming, but it does play- a very sweet tone and perhaps surprisingly responsive reeds all things considered. The original straps have been replaced, but the gold-tooling is a precise recreation of the originals.
If you are looking for the best-playing concertina that money can buy, then this isn’t it. But if you want one of the most unique and special concertinas ever made, then this is right up there- we’ve never had anything like this.
