This is a Lachenal 39-Key Maccann with steel reeds. It has been fitted with new pads and valves, and been tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz).

We’ve seen a number of these Lachenal 39-Key Maccanns in the last couple of years and they are incredibly frustrating things, because they’re actually very good instruments with really nice reeds, but have a number of keys that isn’t quite practical when it comes to Maccann duets. It makes them fantastic concertinas for somebody wanting to start out with the Maccann system (and would be a much higher quality instrument at beginner level than you’d find with English or Anglo instruments), but if you made a lot of progress with it then you’d need to upgrade fairly quickly to something with more keys- which you can do with us, and get back what you paid for this one!

It’s a very nice player- responsive with dynamic range and a lovely tone, but it does show signs of general wear and tear on the fretwork, which is to be expected with an instrument in this price range.
