This is a Lachenal 28-Key in C/G with brass reeds. It has had new ends, and been fitted with new pads, buttons, valves, pads, bushings and straps. It has been tuned to concert pitch (A=440hz).
This was a full rebuild of a wrecked concertina that just never turned out quite as well as we’d hoped. A chunk of the work (new ends, bellows, action) was done externally, and whilst it came back looking great, we’ve never been able to get it to the level we wanted. Rather than let it sit on our shelves for years without advertising it, we thought we’d sell it at an absolute bargain price whilst being entirely transparent about it.
The main thing is that this concertina does play, and certainly plays/looks better than any other 28-button anglo you’ll find at this price point. It has a slightly more mellow tone due to its brass reeds, but it’s certainly not quiet and timid as some early brass-reeders can be. The new 6-fold bellows aren’t amazing in quality, but would be perfectly suitable for any player who doesn’t put their bellows under extreme amounts of pressure. There are a couple of very small leaks on the action board that, even after 49 years of experience with concertinas, we just can’t seem to sort permanently. Very rarely, some concertinas came out of the factory with strange faults when new (usually air leaks), and perhaps this is one of those. Either way, the leaks don’t massively effect playability, and at £800, they’re absolutely worth putting up with for the quality of instrument you could be getting as a learner.
We will not sell this concertina outside of the UK.
